Genesis 1:1-4 (MSG): In the beginning God (Elohim) created [by forming from nothing} the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void or a waste and emptiness and darkness was upon the face of the deep [primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth]. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light. God saw that the light was good (pleasing, useful) and He affirmed and sustained it, and God separated the light [distinguishing it] from the darkness…..
It can be pretty challenging to sit still and listen to hear from God when there are so many competing demands. What we forget is that there is nothing we envision, wish or are going through that takes God unawares. An understanding of this truth can be liberating no matter how far we have gone with any plan.
The scripture above shows how even as the creator of the universe, God’s Spirit still had to hover over it. What was God doing? He was thinking, strategizing, and envisioning something from that state of nothingness. God just kept looking at the emptiness and darkness till He figured out what He wanted. At that point in time God didn’t need anything other than illumination. It was dark and darkness requires light for it to be pleasing and useful, so God spoke light. He would not have spoken light into existence if he had not taken time to brood on the current state of things.
Every time I read this scripture I ask myself what I would have declared into existence. To be honest with you, I think I would have asked for some road out of the darkness and emptiness. However I could not have agreed more with His decision to have light and to separate it from darkness. This was indeed a better decision. Light was more useful in this circumstance than some road out of the dark. It was more sustainable. It had the ability to distinguish one thing from the other. It was useful for separation. That light has never failed to distinguish, please and sustain. It is the same light we still see today and even though that was then, and that was what the situation demanded, God’s word in our lives still proves to be the most pleasing, sustainable and distinguishing as can be.
You see, God knows all and is capable of helping you with what your situation demands. All you need to do is give him room to brood over that situation for you. He will tell you what type of illumination to ask for. The good thing is that He not only tells you what to ask for, He empowers you to declare and act accordingly. He not only declared light, he divided the light from darkness. It is not complete if all you do is make a declaration, there has to be some corresponding action. It is also not possible for God to speak first in your situation and not go ahead of your. My prayer for you this year is that you will allow God speak first in anything you do. Our will could interfere with our dependence on Him if we do not consciously commit our ways unto Him. It always pays to let Him speak first. Will you? Welcome to 2017!
